The King's Royal Rifle Corps


Major-General Wykham Leigh Pemberton KCB


Born on 4th Dec 1833 at Torry Hill in Kent, and educated at Rugby. He served in the Navy in 1845-6 and joined the 60th Rifles in 1852. He was severely wounded at Cawnpore on 27th Nov 1857, losing two fingers on his left hand. He was ADC to Lord Monck, Governor-General of Canada 1862-68.

From March 1875 to 1880 he was Commanding Officer of the 3rd Battalion 60th Rifles, and took them to South Africa for the Zulu War of 1879. In that war he commanded a brigade at Ginghiloro and the relief of Ekowa. He held two staff jobs after that, Assistant QMG 1880-85 and ADC to the Duke of Cambridge 1885-90. He was promoted to Major-General in 1890.

He married Jessie Graham of Skelmorlie Castle in 1884 and had one son and two daughters. They lived at Abbotts Leigh, Haywards Heath and he was JP for Sussex. His appointment as Colonel of the 4th Battalion KRRC was from 5th July 1906 until his death on 2nd March 1918.
