Sergeant-Major A H L Richardson VC

Richardson is wearing the service dress uniform of Strathcona's Horse with his VC medal. Unfortunately he has no badges on his collar, or his stetson hat.

Arthur Richardson was born in Southport, Lancashire on 23rd Sept 1872 and died in Liverpool on 15th Dec 1932. There is a memorial to him in St James's Cemetary. Like many of his NWMP colleagues he was anxious to fight for the mother country in the South African war so he joined Lord Strathcona's Horse with the rank of Sergeant. On 5th July 1900, a patrol of 38 of Strathcona's Horse was attacked by 80 Boers. They were forced to run for it but Richardson's horse was wounded. During the pursuit another trooper fell from his horse when it was brought down. On seeing this, Richardson immediately turned round to rescue him. They were only 300 yards from the Boers who were firing at him all the time. He was the first man to win the Victoria Cross while serving with a Canadian unit under British command.
