The Yeomanry

Officer Group c1861

This picture which is published in the regimental history is erroneously dated 1864. The officers are named, from the left, as Captain Wightman (Adjutant), Captain T B T Hildyard, Colonel Robert Holden (CO), Major T B Charlton, and Lieutenant-Colonel J Sherwin Sherwin. The bearded adjutant wears the new style jacket with captain's rank cuff decoration and olivets. The others wear the old style jacket with the simpler pointed cuff which was the same pattern for all ranks of officer. But they have the olivets down the front, except for the standing officer, wearing the shako, who has gilt buttons. There is also a discrepancy in the 5 lines of gold gimp which adorn the chest. The loops in the middle of each side are sometimes single and sometimes double (as in the case of the two standing officers). The swords appear to be slightly curved, not straight as in the coloured illustration by B T A Griffiths. The dark blue shako, worn by all the officers, has a narrow strip of lace around the top and a wreath-style ornament on the front.
