Private c1860

The undress cap worn in the infantry regiments in the 1850s and 60s was the dark blue Kilmarnock cap with a blue tourie on top. The brass regimental number 19 was placed on the front. The 1856 pattern scarlet tunic had a green collar with rounded open front. There was white piping around the top of the collar and down the front. The tunic was fastened with regimental brass buttons. The green shoulder straps came to a pointed shape at the collar and were also edged in white. It is not possible to make out what is on the shoulder straps but we can see two shapes on his left shoulder which should indicate his battalion as well as his regiment, so that the smaller shape would be 1B or 2B and the larger shape, nearer the shoulder, would be 19.
