Drummer and Bandsman 1852

P W Reynolds’ painting of a drummer and musician of the 19th Regiment shows the distinctive coats of both men. The patterns of lace on the drummer’s red coat were not standardised until 1866 when the red crown pattern was ordered. The musician has a white coat which was ordered for all infantry bandsmen in 1830, although some regiments had adopted white some years previously. The coat has green facings and green unfringed epaulettes. He wears a special pattern sword for bandsmen which was more ornamental than practical. The shako and trousers are the same as those worn by the regiment. These two figures are based on the Ebsworth sketch which Reynolds copied and enhanced.
