Missionary Activity
As medical care and transportation technology improved more and more Christians were interested in saving the souls of non-Christians.
Missionaries would claim that they were ‘Civilising’ the pagan natives and by bringing them to Christianity they were lifting them towards European ideals.
The cause that most often motivated them to come to Africa was the ‘slave trade’.
A hugely influential Christian lobby back in Europe encouraged missionary activity to stamp out slavery and bring Christianity to all corners of the continent
It was Livingstone who came up with the 3Cs of ‘Christianity, Commerce and Civilisation’.
