The Jameson Raid
Unfortunately for him, the Boers reacted quickly
- The invaders were supposed to have cut telegraph wires (but cut a fence by mistake!)
Boer investments in technology and weaponry allowed them to respond rapidly and they blocked the road to Johannesburg
There was a brief firefight but the invaders were quickly rounded up.
It was a humiliation for Jameson, Rhodes and Chamberlain
- The Kaiser of Germany sent a congratulatory telegram to the Boers (The Kruger Telegram)
- Rhodes had to resign as PM of Cape Colony
- Another rebellion broke out in Rhodesia as much of the BSAC firepower had been lost in this Raid
- Jameson was imprisoned
