The Black Hole of Calcutta
With French support, the Nawab of Bengal raised an army of 50,000 and attacked Calcutta.
On capturing it, his forces neglected the British civilians and soldiers captured - many of whom died in appalling conditions known as the ‘Black Hole of Calcutta’
These were some of the first martyrs of the Empire and reaffirmed their commitment to winning in India
