Algeria was a more complicated problem for France.
Although a largely Muslim nation, French had been settling in the country since the 1830s
Islamic Nationalists were encouraged by British decolonisation in Africa and the Middle East
- And by French defeat in Indo-China
But the Pieds-Noirs considered themselves as French and so had no wish for Algeria to become independent
