The Malayan Emergency
- 1948 - 1957
- Communist rebels tried to overthrow British control in Malaya
- MPAJA
- Maoist Chinese who were inspired by the Communist takeover of China in 1949
- Britain had already committed to give independence to Malaya but did not want Communists to immediately overthrow this government.
- Malayans were keen to maintain British military aid against the Chinese rebels
- So the British stayed to fight the communists
- ‘hearts and minds’
- Protect the locals but remove them from the Communists
- Successful and innovative campaign
- Isolated rebels from population
- Britain handed power over to a non-communist Malaysia in 1957
