Delhi Durbar

British officials deliberately recreated the pomp and circumstance of the Mughal Durbars to create an aura around British Imperial power on the sub-continent. Events such as coronations were used to show the extent of imperial power but in a celebratory manner. They were also a way of connecting the British to older Indian customs and traditions and making it seem as if British power was part of a natural continuum.
