The portrait by Sir Francis Grant, elder brother of James, was painted while he was home from India, on leave. The uniform is the full dress of the 9th Lancers, worn from 1841 to 1855, in which James held the rank of major at that time. It is blue with a red collar, and gold lace and epaulettes. The pouch-belt is covered entirely with gold lace and embellished with gilt pickers and chains. His medals include the white cross of the CB. The First China War medal with crimson ribbon and yellow edges. The Punjab Medal, for the Second Sikh War, blue ribbon with yellow edges and clasps for CHILIANWALA and GOOJERAT. The Sutlej Medal, for the First Sikh War, is tucked underneath, having a dark blue ribbon and crimson edges, and should have a clasp for SOBRAON.
