Hope Grant and his Cello

This portrait of Hope Grant in civilian clothes was painted by his brother, Sir Francis Grant, around the same time as the full-length military portrait (1853) while he was home on leave from India. Grant’s musical talent helped secure his appointment as brigade-major in 1841. The appointment was made by Lord Saltoun who was a violinist and probably needed Grant for musical interludes on active service in China.
