Andrew Douglas White was the son of Surgeon John White of the First Fleet and a convict girl Rachel Turner. She later married Thomas Moore. Andrew was born in Sydney in September, 1793.

Andrew White was with the Royal Engineers at Waterloo and returned to Sydney late in 1822 where he was reunited with his mother. He returned to England in July 1824 when he was again employed by the army. His final return to Australia was around 1833 after he had been placed on half pay. He married Mary Anne MacKenzie in June, 1835 and died on 24th November, 1837. There were no children of the marriage.

Andrew is said to have been Australia's first returned soldier.
