Lt Hon Herbert Tongue Allsopp

Herbert Tongue Allsopp was born on 5 Dec 1855. He was one of 11 children of Henry, 1st Baron Hindlip of Hindlip and Elizabeth Tongue. Lord Hindlip was the head of the brewing firm of Samuel Allsopp & Sons. He lived at Hindlip Hall in Worcestershire. The Honorable Herbert was commissioned into the 10th Hussars as a 2nd lieutenant on 13 Oct 1877. He served in Afghanistan in 1878-79, fighting at Ali Masjid. At Futtehabad he was orderly officer to Brigadier General C Gough. On 1 July 1881 he was promoted to lieutenant and sailed with the 10th from India to the Sudan where he fought at El Teb and Tamai in 1884. At Tamai the mounted squadron of the 10th were unable to complete their charge because of the unsuitable ground. The second squadron under Lieutenant Allsopp was ordered to dismount and open fire. This was so effective that the enemy retreated. He returned to England with the regiment and was promoted to captain on 11 July 1887. The photo shows him in dress uniform with the rank of lieutenant in 1887 a few months before his promotion. He has a medal for his service in Afghanistan and the Egypt medals for his service in the Sudan.
