John Cutts Lockwood


John Cutts Lockwood served in the Indian Mutiny as ADC to Sir Sidney Cotton and in the operations on the Yusafzai Frontier in 1858 as Provost Marshal. He joined the army as a cornet on 20 Jan 1854 and was appointed adjutant of the 20th Hussars on 25 Aug 1862, promoted to major on 12 June 1878. He was commanding officer from 12 Feb 1879 to Feb 1880 when he retired. He was the son of the Reverend John Lockwood and lived at Kingham, Oxfordshire, married to Jessie Elizabeth. He died on 22 June 1894. He was photographed as a captain in a group of officers of the 20th Hussars at Umballa in 1871. He wears an undress frock coat with medal ribbons. His medals were for the Indian Mutiny (medal) and for operations in Sittana in 1863 in which he commanded a detachment of the Peshawar Light Horse (medal and clasp for UMBEYLA).
