Helmet Badge 1802 - 1812

The 20th Light Dragoons returned to the UK in 1802 and exchanged their tin helmets for the leather Tarleton light dragoon helmets. This badge was worn on the right side of the helmet. It is the Royal Crest above the Garter with the cypher of King George III in the centre. This design was normally reserved for Royal regiments. It is based on a drawing in the Hawkes pattern book of that period, dated 28 May 1803. The colour of the metal is not certain but most rank and file versions were in brass.
