This officer is a captain or Lieutenant as shown by the embroidery on his collar. His aiguilettes come from his right shoulder cords as opposed to the Corporals and Warrant officers whose auguilettes come from the left shoulder cords. His shabraque dates this photo between 1883 and 1900 (see: Shabraques).
