On Exercise, 1845

Away from London and making a concession to practicality, the Blues discarded their plumes from their helmets and wore them like this. They look a little odd without plumes which is probably why the design was changed in about 1855 to a taller spike on top that would look acceptable on its own. They all wear blue overalls instead of the breeches and boots. Although it isn't clear, the officer wears an undress pouchbelt, white like the mens'. The carbine is carried in a small leather bucket in front of the right leg, and attached to a clip on the mens' pouchbelt.
