Officers in Zululand 1880

The second battalion were sent to South Africa to fight the Zulus in 1879 whilst the first battalion were in the West Indies. The seated officers may be in some sort of uniform or civilian clothes but the young officer standing behind them has a serge frock which is interesting because the blue collar has lion badges on either side. The placing of rank badges changed in 1880 so that they no longer appeared on the collar. This garment has epaulettes but there is no sign of a rank badge so this man may be an Ensign, a rank that had no badge at this date. The cuffs are not blue but have gold Russia braid formed into figures.
