In the regimental history of the 11th by R Brett-James, this is said of Lumley: 'At the end of October 1899 the regiment reached Suez and for the rest of the Boer War, Egypt was to be its base. This was dissappointing, but Lord Cromer insited on keeping one well-trained cavalry regiment in Egypt. Much of the credit - with the lessons of India still in mind - must go to one of the best commanding officers the 11th ever had, Lieut-Col Hon O V G A Lumley. Lumley's position must have been frustrating, for he was never able to command his regiment in action. |
