Helmet Badge 1842

The ‘Albert’ pattern helmet was introduced for the Household Cavalry in 1842 and worn until 1871 when it was replaced by a similar but simplified pattern. This badge is a detail from a photo of the front of an officer’s helmet of the Royal Horse Guards dated 1842. The pattern was used by the 1st and 2nd Life Guards as well as The Blues. The Garter star is generally regarded as the badge of The Blues but it is also a Household Cavalry badge. The 1842 helmet used the star as the central device, elongated to fit within a rococo shield surrounded by laurel and oak leaves, and surmounted by a Victorian crown. The star was not elongated in the front plate of the 1871 helmet.
