Private John Jobbins

John Jobbins was a Welshman who enlisted at Pontypool on 12th Jan 1876 and fought at Rorke's Drift as part of B Company 2nd/24th. After his discharge he lived at Pontnewynydd, Monmouthshire. He attended the funeral of J Williams VC at Llantarnum in 1932 and also appeared in the arena at the Northern Command Tattoo at Gateshead in July 1934. Other Rorke's Drift defenders also present were Colour-Sergeant Bourne, Corporal Saxty, W Cooper and Caleb Wood. It was all too much for poor 78 year-old Jobbins because he fell ill on the train home and died on 22nd Sep 1934. He was buried with military honours at St Cadoc's Church Trevethin, Pontypool.
