Officer 1812

This is from a water-colour of Major Robert Anstruther of the 42nd. The uniform is little different from that worn in 1815. The jacket is buttoned over to show the gold lace on the lapels. He has a gold epaulette on both shoulders which indicates his senior rank. Most portraits of officers only show the top part of the uniform so it is useful to see the length of the kilt and the style of the fur sporran which has gold tassels.
