Fuentes de Onoro

This dramatic painting by Benigni depicts a mounted duel between an officer of the Rifle Brigade, in green uniform, and the dashing French cavalry leader, General Fournier-Sarlovese. He commanded the 7th 13th and 20th Regiments of Chasseurs a Cheval that caused Wellington's cavalry so much trouble on 3 May 1811 at Fuentes de Onoro and harassed Craufurd's infantry squares on 5 May. It was this general's chasseurs that the 42nd fought against on the 5th. A British pioneer and a drummer of the 71st Highland Light Infantry can be seen on the left of the picture.
