This illustration is based on descriptions of drummers and Fifers of the 1670 period. The coats of the musicians were in the facing colour as were those of the pike-men. The buff coats were therefore the reverse of those worn by the majority of the regiment who carried muskets. A recruiting party would have fifes and drums playing to attract attention, and literally 'drum up' recruits. |
