Captain The Hon Rowland Philipps MC


Captain The Hon Rowland Erasmus Philipps was in the 9th Battalion Royal Fusiliers and was killed at Ovillers along with 8 other officers of his battalion on 7th July 1916. On an earlier occasion he acted with great bravery and was awarded the Military Cross for his leadership at the Hohenzollern Redoubt on 2nd March 1916. He was commanding 50 men of B Company which rushed across to seize part of The Chord. Twenty of his men were buried when a mine exploded and Philipps was wounded in the face. His men continued forward to cut wire protecting the enemy trench.
