HM Queen Elizabeth II

The Queen is here in the uniform of the Grenadier Guards riding side-saddle on Winston, a chestnut gelding that was ridden by her father before her. She rode him until 1956 and then rode another chestnut called Imperial. In 1963 she rode a grey called Doctor but in 1969 she was presented with a dark horse called Burmese, by the RCMP. This horse was ridden by her on the Birthday Parade until 1986. After that she gave up riding on the parade and continued as a passenger in a coach wearing civilian clothes, which she has done every year since. Her uniform was especially adapted for female wear, the hat being more comfortable than the tall bearskin.
