Ahmedabad 1809

The 15th century Sidi Bashir mosque was famous for its vibrating minarets which were a source of mystery as they could be shaken when no earthquake was occurring. This print was made from a drawing by Captain Grindlay in 1809. Ahmedabad was one of the most important cities in the Gujarat region. It came under the control of the East India Company from 1818 during the Third Anglo-Maharatta War. A military cantonment was established in 1824 but in 1826 the 4th Bombay Native Infantry Regiment suffered badly from cholera there.
