Map of Bombay 1775

Bombay was situated on an island just south of a larger island, Salsette, through which it was necessary to travel to reach the mainland at Thana. In 1774 a Portuguese fleet attempted to gain possession of Salsette, and the port of Bassein further north. The EIC responded by occupying Salsette and increasing the Bombay army to guard it.
