Seringapatam 1799

Henry Singleton’s painting of the storming of Seringapatam was the basis for this engraving by Anthony Cardon, published by Messrs Schiavonetti of 12 Michael Place, Brompton, in 1801. The caption says: ‘Major General Baird having divided his force into two divisions, one under the command of Colonel Sherbrooke and the other of Colonel Dunlop, the troops ascended the breach under a heavy fire, when the latter officer was severely wounded, but though vigorously opposed, both divisions were completely successful.’ The print is dedicated to King George III and has a portrait of General George Harris between the English caption and the French translation. The officer with raised sword is Colonel Sherbrooke who led the Bombay troops to the left as they reached the top of the breach. Colonel Dunlop is probably the wounded officer in the foreground. The Indian grenadiers can be seen in the left foreground and elsewhere amongst the British troops.
