Viziadrug Fort

This fort, also known as Vijaydurg is the oldest fort on the Sindhudurg coast. It was built between 1193 and 1205, during the reign of Raja Bhoja II of the Shilahar dynasty. It was originally known as Gheria Fort as it was close to Girye village, and covered a 5-acre area, surrounded by the sea on all sides. It was captured by the Bhonsle Maharatta Shivaji in 1653 who re-named it Vijaydurg and added walls on the eastern side, 36 metres high, and 20 bastions, making it almost impregnable. These days the fort covers 17 acres and has the sea on three sides. The imposing stone structure is typical of the strong fortresses that can be found in the region of Malwan.
