The Yeomanry

Trumpeter c1870

The change from the shako to the busby in 1856 meant that the trumpeters and band were faced with the loss of the the pale blue distinctive head-dress but the new busby had a blue bag instead of red as worn by the others. It was a cobalt blue, darker than the blue shakos. His pelisse was the same shade of blue. This trumpeter, from a Norie painting appears not to be wearing a pouch belt and this agrees with the trumpeter in another Norie painting where the trumpeter is in pill-box cap. The busby in this picture shows a silver rose badge in the middle. He rides a grey horse which was a usual distinction of trumpeters in cavalry regiments.
