Grenadier 1751

The lace on the coat had changed in 1751 to white with a yellow edge on one side. The mitre cap was finely embroidered on blue cloth, having the regimental badge of the White Horse of Hanover. The Garter around the Horse was the motto HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE. The red section above the eyes was common to all the regiments, also having the White Horse, but the motto around it was NEC ASPERA TERRENT. The grenadiers were the only company in the regiment to wear these special caps. The facings were blue, as the King’s was a Royal regiment, so the lapels, cuffs, coat turn-backs and the breeches were blue. The waistcoat was red, edged with lace. The wide leather shoulder belt holds a black bag for grenades, and has a brass match-holder on the front to hold a lighted taper used to ignite the grenades. The series of paintings in the Royal Collection, of which this is one, are by David Morier, a Swiss artist commissioned by the Duke of Cumberland.
