Grenadier 1768

This is from a series of 70 prints published under the title ‘Uniforms of the Infantry according to the King’s Regulations of the 19th December 1768’. The artist is not named. The prints are identical, but hand coloured to include the lace colours and facings. The inset shows an example of the lace worn on the uniforms of the 8th King’s Regiment. The regulations of 1768 simplified the coat seen in the 1751 Morier painting, having smaller cuffs and adding a fold-down collar. The wings are laid flat on the shoulders and also laced like the button-holes. The waistcoat and breeches were white. The shoulder-belt retained the brass match-case. The mitre cap was no longer embroidered, but made of black fur and fronted with a universal metal plate showing the Royal Crest and the motto NEC ASPERA TERRENT.
