Officer c1780

Infantry officers' uniforms had frequent changes of style in the latter half of the 18th century. This miniature portrait shows the turned down collar on this junior officer. The blue collar and lapels are edged in white. Unfortunately the picture is indistinct so that the buttons do not appear to have gold lace loops. This was a coat worn for day-to-day garrison duty, not a dress coat. The shoulder belt has an oval plate that probably includes the white horse on a red background. He has one gold epaulette, worn on his right shoulder.
