Grenadier 1798

The grenadier in this painting shows some differences with the 1768 print. The black fur cap is more brown, and has a brass plate on the front instead of a black and white metal plate. There is a white cord wrapped around diagonally, with a hanging white tassel. His red coat has blue lapels to the waist with laced button-holes. The lace would have been the same pattern as for the 1768 grenadier but the artist seems to have lacked the patience to show the thin blue and yellow lines. The shoulder straps are well shown, as being of red cloth with white edging and having large tufted wings. The shoulder-belt no longer has the brass match-case, and crosses with the other belt which supports a bayonet, and for grenadiers, a sword as well.
