Officer, Mess Dress 1867

This unusual photo of the early mess dress shows how the scarlet shell jacket was adapted for formal evening wear in the officers’ mess. The upright blue collar has been folded down and the white lining of the jacket revealed as broad lapels. Button holes can be seen on the left lapel, and presumably the corresponding gilt buttons would be on the underside of the right lapel. Gold shoulder cords are on each shoulder. The blue collar is edged white, and the pointed blue cuffs were also edged white. The jacket was worn open. There is white edging to the blue waistcoat, fastened with small gilt buttons.
