Officer, India c1885

The 2nd Battalion served in India from 1877 to 1892. This officer wears the scarlet India pattern frock which was worn during the 1870s, but after 1881 shoulder straps were added, showing rank with stars and crowns. Rank was also shown on the cuffs with gold braid. Simkin’s illustration shows a captain, and the drawings on the right, by Bryan Fosten show the four ranks; lieutenant, captain, major and lieutenant-colonel. After 1881 ranks were indicated on the shoulder instead of the collar: lieutenant-colonel, a crown and star; major, a crown; captain, 2 stars; lieutenant, one star; second lieutenants, no badge.

His white foreign service helmet has a white pagri wrapped around, with a pagri badge on the front. The badge on the collar of his frock is shown as a silver horse, but the 1883 dress regulations state that the King’s Liverpool regiment has on the tunic collar, the Rose of Lancaster in gilt metal and red enamel with KINGS in Old English on a detached gilt scroll below.
