Drummer’s Tunic c1870

This rare example of a drummer’s tunic worn in the King’s regiment c1870 clearly shows the pattern of lace that covered the seams on the back of the tunic and the back seams on the sleeves. What cannot be seen here is the lace down the front of the sleeve. The same lace decorates the collar, pointed cuff, the shoulder straps and wings. Where the lace on the back reaches the waist are small squares of lace framing two buttons. The lace is white with a blue fleur-de-lys pattern.

The pointed cuff was introduced for all ranks in 1868 to replace the round cuff with slashed flap. It was edged with white piping as was the collar. The patterned lace just inside the edge of the blue cuff showed a light of the blue facing colour. The tunic was worn with the undress cap as well as the 1869 pattern shako.
