Band, 1st Battalion 1903

In 1903 the 1st Battalion, King’s Liverpool Regiment was in Rangoon, Burma. The photo shows a large band of at least 53 individuals. One is an officer who may be the Adjutant, sitting to the right of the bass drum, holding a white Wolseley helmet. He is in the dress tunic whereas the others are wearing a scarlet India frock. This frock was worn for formal parades. It fastened with five buttons and was edged around the collar and cuffs with white piping, the cuffs having a trefoil at the point.

The Bandmaster sits the other side of the drum to the officer. He wears an officer- style India frock which has gold braid on the cuffs in the form of an Austrian knot and extra figuring. He has a bandmaster’s badge on his right forearm. There is gold braid edging to the collar and down the front. But he is a Warrant Officer Class I, as shown by the fact that he has a sergeant’s red sash on his right shoulder. Two sergeants sit to the left of him, wearing India frocks with gold braid, but trefoils on the cuffs like the bandsmen. Another Warrant Officer sits next to the officer, with four chevrons, point upwards, on his forearm. The bandsmen have a white pouch-belt on their left shoulders for the white pouch on their back. This holds sheet music. The bass drummer stands behind his drum wearing a white strap around his neck and a white belt around his waist. The rest of the bandsmen have a brown leather waist-belt with a circular clasp.
