Regimental Colour 1890

In 1868 the size was reduced to 3ft 9in flying, by 3ft deep. Each Colour was to be ornamented with a fringe. The Royal Crest replaced the spear head on top of the pike. With the reorganisation of the Line regiments in 1881 the honours awarded to both regiments were to be shown on the Regimental Colours of both battalions, arranged on a circular laurel wreath. The King’s Regiment remained as a two battalion regiment, and by 1890 had accrued 12 battle honours. EGYPT (and the Sphinx) was placed below the central device. Five honours were placed each side, on the laurel wreath: BLENHEIM, RAMILLIES, OUDENARDE, MALPLAQUET (all four granted in 1882) DETTINGEN (granted in 1882) MARTINIQUE, NIAGARA (granted in 1815 and 1816), DELHI, LUCKNOW (these two granted in 1863), and PEIWAR KOTAL. The honour for AFGHANISTAN 1878-80 was placed separately above the Victorian crown.

This cigarette card shows the Regimental Colour for the 1st Battalion King’s Liverpool Regiment. The Roman numeral I appears in the upper canton. The small Union flag had been removed from Regimental Colours in 1881.
