General Sir William Henry Mackinnon GCB KCVO


William Henry Mackinnon was born on 15 Dec 1852. He was the son of William Alexander Mackinnon of Strathaird, 34th Chief of Mackinnon, and Margaret Sophia Willes. He was educated at Harrow. In 1870 he was commissioned into the Grenadier Guards and served as Military Secretary to the Governor of Malta in 1884 and from 1885 until 1887 posted to Madras to be Private Secretary to the Governor. He was Assistant Adjutant General in the UK in 1893. In the Boer War he was appointed to command the City of London Imperial Volunteers from Dec 1899 to Dec 1900. He was invested with the CVO (Royal Victorian Order) on 11 Aug 1902, and appointed Director of Auxiliary Forces in 1905, and the Territorial Army in 1908. He was GOC Western Command in 1910 and retired in 1916. He was appointed Colonel of the King’s Liverpool Regiment on 2 March 1916.

General Sir William Henry Mackinnon GCB KCVO was married on 15 Dec 1881 to Madelaine Frances Hatton, daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Villiers La Touche Hatton and Rosia Mary de Bathe. They had a daughter, Nora Mary Fynvola Mackinnon (c 1882-1953). General Mackinnon died on 17 March 1929.
