Lieutenant General Sir Henry Bayly GCH


Henry Bayly was born in 1769, the son of Colonel Nicholas Bayly MP of Plas Newydd, Anglesey. His mother was Frances (Fanny) Nettleford. They were related to the Pagets as Nicholas Bayly was the son of Caroline Paget and brother of Henry Paget, 1st Earl of Uxbridge. Henry Bayly was commissioned as an ensign in the 88th Foot on 12 April 1783. He transferred to the Coldstream Guards on 30 Oct 1790 and fought at the Battle of Lincelles in 1793 where he was injured in the hand while holding the Colour. He was in the Invasion of Holland in 1799. He served as ADC to the Prince Regent in 1811. He commanded a brigade in the South of France in 1814, and in 1816 was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Guernsey. He reached the rank of lieutenant general in 1825 and appointed Colonel of the 8th King’s Regiment on 13 Sep 1825. He was also appointed GCH (Knight Grand Cross, Hanoverian Guelphic Order) in 1834. He died on 20 April 1846.
