| During the War of the Spanish Succession he participated in the capture of Barcelona and was appointed a minister to Spain. In 1708 he became commander in chief of the British forces in Spain. He was keen to be more offensively minded and demonstrated this new aggressive policy by taking Minorca. He captured Port Mahon and made it into a winter base for the British fleet. |
