Dar-es-Salaam Harbour, Tanganyika

Dar-es-Salaam was the administrative centre of the German colony of Tanganyika. The British Indian Army had waged a fairly unsuccessful campaign against the Germans here in 1914. The German commander then started a remarkable guerilla style war throughout East and Central Africa that lasted for the entire duration of the war and which forced the British and Imperial forces to dedicated significant forces to attempt to subdue the German soldiers. Indeed, Lettow-Vorbeck and his small force managed to escape for the entire duration of the war. From a medical perspective, many of the casualties at this stage of the war in East Africa were as likely from the various tropical diseases prevalent in the area.
