The Scottish Parliament

1999 saw the opening of The Scottish Parliament and Welsh Assembly as Britain devolved power to these regions. Many nationalists hope that the devolved power will pave the way for independence much as they did for the old imperial dominions like Canada and Australia. However, unionists hope that the Welsh and Scots appreciate that the United Kingdom has been the most successful Union in history and that the countries have achieved great things whilst working together within a single political unit.
