Sir Charles Orr's Memoirs Volume 3

Esquimalt

The Royal Navy Establishment at Esquimalt was created in 1865 as an alternate base (or ‘station’) in the Pacific; the RN also had an operational base at Valparaiso, Chile. It operated until 1905 when the newly signed alliance with Japan made it less necessary to have a Royal Naval presence in the Northern Pacific. It also allowed the Royal Navy to focus on concentrating in the Naval Arms Race with Germany.
