The British Empire and its effect on Plymouth

St Mary's Church, Laira

The Stained Glass Window is to the East of the Altar in the Southern Aisle. There is some confusion as to the age of Percy Charles Luscombe as this window claims he was 19 but the gravestone and official documentation claim he was 18. Given his young age Percy had no wife and no children but he had a large family and a community in St. Mary’s church and throughout the Laira neighbourhood. They all must have felt his death very personally in order for them to have raised the money for such an impressive stained glass window in his honour. His family were not well off and would have depended on a wider community effort to make such a dedication to his sacrifice. The window was formally dedicated to him with a special service in 1919.
