The British Empire and its effect on Plymouth

St Mary's Church, Laira

St Mary's Church Foundation Stone was laid in 1911 but its opening was just 4 days after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. This almost certainly explains why it was never completed fully as the entrance was never added as originally conceived. Preparations for war soon swept away all prosaic concerns and resources were needed for the military in 1914.
